The three day visit to Bathurst, Lithgow and Wentworth Falls turned out to be one of the most difficult on record as the combination of drought, hard ground and high winds made conditions unpleasant and golfing very challenging.
The accommodation at Bathurst and Lithgow was excellent and, socially, the tour was great but the courses weren't at their best. None had fairway watering.
Bathurst was the pick of the courses. The layout is really good and the fairways surprisingly had a reasonable grass cover as clearly some irrigation has taken place. The greens and tee boxes were very good and a cool breeze accompanied us for the first few holes.
Lithgow has some good holes but the course condition is probably the worst we have struck since we played Finley way back in '95. The ground was hard, grass very scarce, the wind blew and to further complicate the conditions, the greens had been cored only a couple of days beforehand and were sandy and very slow. Not a great experience unfortunately.
Wentworth Falls was also in poor condition although the greens were slippery but well maintained. Apart from the hard dry ground, the biggest problem was the wind which made golf near impossible on a tree lined course with lots of run. Again not the best of experiences.
Kieran McGuire holed out on the par three 15th hole at Wentworth Falls to give us successive tour aces after Bill Murdoch aced the par three 13th hole at Maitland on the Hunter Tour just a couple of months ago.
