The 17th successive annual 3 day tour of the Hunter Valley is over and we have joint winners of the Tour Championship in Alan Digger and John Hardy. Unfortunately Alan Bell didn't score so well this year and picked up another NAGA.
It was another enjoyable and successful tour with fine weather prevailing every day, albeit with a little wind, but the forecast rain showers on Monday held off and we enjoyed fine golfing conditions.
Muree was very dry, particularly off the fairways, but at least we got to see all 18 holes this year (hail interrupted our first visit last year) but it is in reasonable condition considering the long dry spell.
Maitland is in good condition and they are presently undertaking extensive works on the irrigation system which should drought-proof it for future years. Most of the field scored well at this venue and we took out all three of the competition prize vouchers on offer, as well as 17 of the 22 balls. Highlight of the day was a hole in one for Billy Murdoch at the par 3, 13th hole which won the NTP (1 ball) and the club awarded him 5 balls for the ace.
Merewether, played under Hackers Rules as there was no club comp, turned out to be a good experience and the course generally in good nick, although the greens were a bit of a challenge being a little on the slow side. Exactly one-half of the field managed 30 points or better but none of the survival ball's survived and that prizemoney returns to consolidated revenue for another day. Lunch on the last day was delivered right on time and was an excellent presentation.
The accommodation at the Windsor Castle Hotel again proved to be a great venue with good facilities, good food and a very big and busy crowd. The specially arranged breakfast on Sunday at EVDC Café just down the road was well received and, so far as I know, worked well for everyone.
