The 2 day short tour of Shoalhaven Heads is over and another great time was had by all.
The weekend weather was a little unkind with showers all through Saturday's play and much less, but still a very slight shower or two, on Sunday. But at least it wasn't windy and cold. The course was in great condition and I can't stop saying how much I think of this excellent layout. It is a credit to members and the limited staff both on course and in the clubhouse and I just wish it was a bit closer to Picton and I'd be playing it every week.
The Pro, Greg and his off-sider, Cec, were a great help and are as well organised and easy to deal with as any I have dealt with over 25 years of organising the 'Hackers' and believe me, some clubs are a long way from getting this part right.
Going above and beyond the call, Greg bought sausages, mini-steaks and bread on his way back from Wollongong after playing hockey on Sunday morning and, with Cec's help, put on a BBQ for us after play when the club didn't have food services available - which was very much appreciated by all. Greg also donated a dozen balls for our competition and that was won by the Gold team in a card draw at the presentation on Sunday afternoon.
Wayne Purcell (38 points) easily won the single stableford on Saturday from newcomer Simon Cross (33 points) and also won the lion's share of the day's skins. On top of that, Wayne also won the Sureshot GPS device kindly donated by Owen Smith for the best score over 5 specific secret holes.
The experimental 'Scramble' on Sunday was won narrowly by the Green team but they failed by just one point to catch the overnight leader, the Gold Team, who ran out winners of the weekend Tour Team Championship.
The accommodation at The Heads Hotel complex was nice and close to the golf club and, apart from the small break-down in communication within their organisation which saw the small cottage occupied by John Hardy and Killer unserviced, was excellent. However a full refund for the cottage was given without hesitation and that money was used to pay for the Sunday BBQ at the golf club. All in all it was a much enjoyed weekend despite the weather god's unco-operative attempt to make the visit more difficult than we had hoped it would be.
